DTN News - Asian Defense News: China Not To Import Jeep Wrangler Over Safety Issues

Defense War News Updates: DTN News - Asian Defense News: China Not To Import Jeep Wrangler Over Safety Issues
(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - April 9, 2011:
China would suspend import of Jeep Wrangler vehicles because of reported safety hazards. Many vehicles have abruptly caught fire, the country's product quality watchdog has said.

Consumers in China have reported several cases of imported Jeep Wranglers catching fire. Investigations found that the fires were the result of a problem in the vehicles' automatic transmission systems, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine said in a statement.

The Jeep Wrangler is a four-wheel drive sport utility vehicle (SUV) manufactured by American automaker Chrysler and is now in its fourth generation. The Wrangler debuted in 1987, was revised in 1997 and again in 2007.

The administration, however, did not mention whether the reported incidents resulted in casualties, according to Xinhua.

It urged Chrysler to determine the cause of the problem and solve it.

DTN News - Asian Defense News: Singapore News ~ Relatives Of NSF’s Girlfriend Convicted Of Assault

Asian Defense News: Singapore News ~ Relatives Of NSF’s Girlfriend Convicted Of Assault
(NSI News Source Info) SINGAPORE -
April 8, 2011: Men who assaulted a full-time national serviceman (NSF) for seeing his underaged girlfriend were found guilty by a Singapore court on Thursday.

19-year-old Lee Poh Kiang dated a 14-year-old girl in 2009 despite objections from the girl's family, reported the Straits Times.

In that year, the girl's father, uncle and four other men took away Lee's cellphone and abducted him to a cemetery at midnight. The group then threw physical punches at Lee who was 17 then, and threatened to kill him with asamurai sword.

Before letting Lee go, the girl's father, 43, and uncle, 38, warned him to stay away from his daughter.

Lee reported the assault incident to the police. When the girl's father and uncle found about the charge, they were said to have had taken him to a karaoke lounge and had tried to persuade him to change his police statements.

After a hearing lasting three weeks, District Judge Sarjit Singh convicted the men on Thursday of being part of an unlawful assembly armed with deadly weapons that hurt and abducted Lee.

Defence counsel Subhas Anandan said the family intends to appeal the convictions.

The men will be sentenced on 21 April. Their accomplices, who are unidentified, are still at large.

DTN News - Asian Defense News: Singapore News ~ Photos Of Man In ‘Army Skirt’ Create Buzz

Asian Defense News: Singapore News ~ Photos Of Man In ‘Army Skirt’ Create Buzz
(NSI News Source Info) SINGAPORE - April 8, 2011:
Move over, army maid. Now photos of a man wearing a camouflage skirt in public in Singapore is generating buzz online.

The photo, originally uploaded on STOMP, surfaced barely a week after pictures of a maid carrying an full-time national serviceman's (NSF's) backpack sparked an online debate about Singapore's youth being too "soft".

The eyewitness, who gave his name as Norman, took the photo. He said, "I saw him at Parkway Parade shopping centre, calmly waiting in line at a money changer, despite the stares he was getting from people around him."

"The skirt was in the style of a Scotsman's kilt, and had three of the original-style pockets on it, one at the side and two in the front. It looked quite professionally-made."

Describing the man as appearing to be in his mid-forties, he added that the skirt looked like it was made from an old Army No. 4 uniform, and even had button-on pockets sewn onto it.

While some netizens have labelled him a 'softie', others think we need to lighten up.

Insurance agent Tan Li Peng, 26, told Yahoo! Singapore, "First we have maids carrying our army backpacks, now men are donning 'army skirts'. I feel embarrassed as a Singaporean guy."

23-year-old undergraduate Royston Lin added, "It's strange to see a man walking around in a skirt in public. But I guess that's in the context of Singapore's social norms. In Scotland it would be perfectly acceptable. Perhaps he should be mindful of the culture he's in."

Others like 21-year-old student Nuraliza H. said, "I think we need to lighten up. He's just experimenting and having fun. After all, I've seen male runway models wearing kilts too."

Fashion-forward, or plain bizarre? You be the judge.

DTN News - ASIAN DEFENSE NEWS: Japan News ~ Japan To Restart Sumo Tournament Free Of Charge

Defense War News Updates: DTN News - ASIAN DEFENSE NEWS: Japan News ~ Japan To Restart Sumo Tournament Free Of Charge
(NSI News Source Info)
TOKYO, Japan
- April 6, 2011:
Sumo tournaments will restart in Japan next month, with spectators offered free entry in May as the sport looks to recover an image tarnished by a match-fixing scandal.

The 15-day March tournament was cancelled as allegations emerged that results had been decided in advance. A total of 23 former and present sumo wrestlers were named, with those still active in the sport forced to resign.

The Japan Sumo Association said the May 8-22 contest will be staged as a test event to evaluate the skills of wrestlers and decide their rankings for the next tournament. The results will still be entered into official records.

The association said it had decided to make the event free of charge because the quality of the field had been diluted by the retirement of a number of wrestlers in the top division.

Tickets to watch a day's wrestling usually sell for anything up to 10,700 yen ($125).

"Please let us apologise for causing trouble to every fan and every person concerned," Hanaregoma, chairman of the association, told a news conference.

He said it was still too early to resume a full regular tournament as probes into the scandal continued and steps were being taken to prevent a recurrence of the match rigging.

"I want wrestlers to fight good bouts so that our fans realise anew that sumo is wonderful," he said, adding no decision had been made on charging for future tournaments.

The ancient sport has long been under suspicion over allegations that bouts were rigged, but no active wrestler had acknowledged guilt until last month when a number of incriminating text messages surfaced as police probed another scandal involving wrestlers placing illegal baseball bets.

On Tuesday, the association announced that the 22 tainted wrestlers had accepted its advice and retired.

But a stablemaster, Tanigawa, denied being involved in match rigging as a wrestler and refused to accept the advice and the association throw the 37-year-old out for his defiance.

Sumo, an ancient and highly ritualistic sport, has been shaken by a series of scandals in recent years, including illegal drug use and brutal training methods that resulted in the death of a teenage apprentice.

DTN News - ASIAN DEFENSE NEWS: Singapore News ~ Huge Uproar Over Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong's Comments

Defense War News Updates: DTN News - ASIAN DEFENSE NEWS: Singapore News ~ Huge Uproar Over Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong's Comments
(NSI News Source Info) SINGAPORE - April 6, 2011:
: Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong's open admission that PAP wards are favoured for HDB upgrading exercises has touched a raw nerve among netizens.

His admission came as a reply to a university student living in the Hougang Single-Member Constituency (SMC) ward who asked if he could pay less tax since the opposition-held ward does not enjoy upgrading programmes.

Since this story was first posted, reaction has been swift with over 1,500 Facebook shares and 150 comments. The majority were highly critical of PM Lee's stand.

The highest-rated comment came from Yahoo! userChia, who posted, "Upgrading is not delivered solely based on policies. It is driven by money from the reserves. The money comes from the people and not from PAP."

He added that, "It (upgrading) is a national building programme. A nation does not belong to any party but the people."

Another Yahoo! user, Davido, said, "I can't believe the PM said that, my only respect left for him is that he is candid enough to admit not all wards are treated equally."

User VKH was also appalled at the PM's comments.

He wrote, "I thought that as PM, he was there to represent ALL the people, without favour or preference. He is not the PM of just those he voted for, but for each and every Singapore citizen, including those who did not vote for him or his party... How can the PM say that if you vote for PAP, you get nice chocolate cake and coffee, but if you vote for other party you only get water and biscuit?"

The furious reaction comes a day after fourth-year engineering student Seah Yin Hwa asked PM Lee why residents living in Hougang SMC are penalised for picking "a 'Teochew nang' (dialect for Teochew person) who doesn't wear a white uniform"

When asked by PM Lee on how he was penalised, the 25-year-old Seah said, "When it comes to upgrading, what is being told to us is that we don't have the funds to actually go ahead with lift upgrading, as well as shelters to the bus stops. When I look across the road to Aljunied GRC, they have everything, " reported The Straits Times.

Paraphrasing the question posed, PM Lee said that what Mr Seah meant is why opposition wards are not treated at least as good, or maybe even better than the PAP wards.

PM Lee's reply was, "The answer is that there has to be a distinction. Because the PAP wards supported the Government and the policies which delivered these good things."

He said that while basic goods such roads, transportation, housing, healthcare and defence apply to Singaporeans, the extras — which come down to the upgrading programmes — is a national programme.

"Between the people who voted and supported the programme and the government, and the people who didn't, I think if we went and put yours before the PAP constituencies, it would be an injustice," PM Lee told the 1,200 students who were attending aMinisterial Forum organised by the National University of Singapore (NUS) Students' Political Association. .

In response to PM Lee, Seah cheekily asked if he could pay less tax and maybe "take one or two years off my NS?", which drew laughter and applause from the audience.

But PM Lee said that this is not possible because the SAF, defence, taxes and all the facilities which have been provided, are enjoyed by every Singaporean.

Rounding off his reply, PM Lee said, "But you can do something about it, you know. You don't have to keep voting for people not in white-on-white."

PM Lee explains ministerial salaries

The contentious issue of ministerial salaries was also discussed at the forum after a Nanyang Technological University (NTU)accountancy student brought it up, comparing the salaries of leaders from Singapore and the United States.

"The US president is actually paid less than a Cabinet minister in Singapore. I'm sure we agree his job is a lot tougher than our Cabinet ministers," said the student.

In his response, PM Lee said that US President Barack Obama may be earning less than a Singaporean minister, but the American system is not without its flaws.

For example, he highlighted that the US had different ways of rewarding its presidents and that the low salary of the president had suppressed salaries down the line.

Explaining his first point, PM Lee said that former US presidents are involved in money-spinning book and lecture tours after they step down.

"Retired US presidents go on book tours, they write books, they are paid US$10 million (S$13 million) advance, they get somebody to help them write a tome and they make a lecture tour…Every lecture (by former president) Bill Clinton: US$100,000 to US$200,000 for half an hour.

"That's the system. I think that's not a good system for us. We don't want ministers to retire and go on lecture tours."

Touching on his second point, PM Lee said the low salary of US presidents adversely impacted the rest of the civil service down the line.

"Because the president's pay being set at a level which is not quite right, all the rest of the civil service and government pay in the US system has to take dressing from there and come down…and come down," he said.

PM Lee stressed that Singapore's ministerial pay structure was one that works.

But when asked if salaries should still be pegged to the private sector given the many candidates taken from the civil service and unions, he replied, "The reason I can get good people from the Government and the unions is that I have a pay system which is working properly.

"People do not enter politics to get rich but neither will they enter politics and as a result, they and their family will become poor."

He added, "It is something which is not easy to accept emotionally but is the right thing for Singapore. If you want the system to work for the long term, you must be honest about it. What do I pay for? I pay for the importance of the job and how difficult it is to do."
